AMD will discontinue 6790 6850 and 6870

Before AMD released its expected high-performance chip, the Pitcairn 7800 Series, in March, AMD has begun plans to suspend production of the Radeon HD 6790, 6850 and 6870.

It is reported that AMD will suspend production of these three GPU products in the coming weeks and months. Although the Radeon HD 6700 and 6800 series are currently selling well, AMD hopes that the product can quickly transition to the 7700, 7800, and 7900 series based on the GCN architecture.

However, AMD will continue to manufacture and maintain the Radeon HD 6500/6600 series because there is no GCN architecture-related product that can replace their position.

Despite the Radeon HD 6850's higher performance than the Radeon HD 7770 and its cheaper price, AMD decided to suspend production of the Radeon HD 6850 and force consumers to purchase the higher-priced Radeon HD 7700 for profit. However, it may take several months for the Radeon HD 6800 series to be discontinued and to empty the inventory and the market.
