NI Introduces New Millimeter Wave RF Headers for 5G NR Research and System Prototyping
NI (National Instruments, National Instruments, NI) is a software-centric platform provider that accelerates the development and performance of automated test and measurement systems. NI provides engineers with the tools they need to develop prototypes of communication systems that reduce development and testing time for development and introduction of new technologies. In 2016, NI announced a millimeter-wave transceiver system designed with modular millimeter-wave software radio (SDR) technology designed for 5G and advanced wireless communications. Since then, NI continues to release new millimeter-wave RF heads to provide 3GPP-compliant frequency coverage. The new RF head is fully compatible with millimeter wave transceiver systems, including baseband subsystems and software. They can also be interchanged with previously released millimeter-wave RF heads, which means that existing software can be reused with a small number of changes, covering different millimeter-wave bands.
The source code created with LabVIEW provides a modifiable and open physical layer consistent with the Verizon 5G TF specification and the 3GPP 5G NR specification R15. The physical layer, combined with the millimeter-wave transceiver system, provides researchers with a flexible solution to operate as a ready-to-use wireless communication system. They can modify the source code of their specific research area and use it for a wider range of applications, including channel sounding, 5G NR algorithm development and optimization, and beam steering algorithm research and testing.

The new 24.5-33.4 GHz radio head includes mmRH-3642, mmRH-3652 and mmRH-3602. The new 37-43.5 GHz radio head includes mmRH-3643, mmRH-3653 and mmRH-3603.
