OCI Co.Ltd, a manufacturer of polycrystalline silicon in Korea, sees a surge in demand for sapphire substrates. Recently, it announced that it will spend 100 billion won (about US$90 million) to build a sapphire crystal rod plant with LED upstream materials in 2011. Mass production.
OCI said that the plant is scheduled to start in April 2011 and will enter mass production in September, with an annual production capacity of 4 million mm. The total production of sapphire ingots in the plant is expected to account for 11% of the world.
