The turning point appears? Google's automatic driving cost of the main sensor is reduced by 50%
Google's auto-driving subsidiary Waymo revealed that it has achieved self-manufacturing of all internal driverless sensor hardware, which is ahead of several competitors such as Uber.
Waymo CEO Krafcik announced the news at the Detroit Auto Show. According to the Financial Times, Krafcik said that this is a big turning point for the company, which will significantly reduce the manufacturing cost of self-driving cars. Manufacturing costs are a major bottleneck for mass production of autonomous vehicles.
Waymo declined to disclose the cost of its latest hardware, but the company revealed one of its components—a radar array that uses lasers to capture objects in three dimensions—and its price dropped from $75,000 to less than one-tenth.
A sensor is a detection device that can sense the information being measured and can transform the sensed information into an electrical signal or other desired form of information output according to a certain rule. In layman's terms, the sensor can be said to be "one of the glasses of a driverless car."
The unmanned car developed by Google uses intelligent software and sensing devices to sense all the conditions around the car and simulate human judgment:
The roof is equipped with a lidar rotation sensor, which can scan the environment within a radius of about 70 meters; the sensor on the left rear wheel of the vehicle has a position evaluation function; the on-board computer "understands" the traffic light through the camera near the rearview mirror to identify Sidewalks and obstacles, etc. Four other standard automatic radar sensors are located at the front and rear of the car to help determine the distance between the body and the obstacle.
Google says these vehicles are safer than manned cars because they react more quickly and efficiently.
However, although it is known as “unmannedâ€, it still requires a driver to “wait†after the steering wheel and manually operate in an emergency.
