PI introduces LED driver IC for commercial lighting performance

Power Integrations, Inc. announced the availability of the latest LED driver LYTSwitchTM IC family of products designed for consumer, commercial and industrial lighting applications. The product delivers precise regulation and high efficiency in lamp replacement applications and high-bay lighting, while delivering outstanding performance in thyristor dimming bulb applications.

The LYTSwitch IC integrates PFC and constant current (CC) into a single switching stage, which increases efficiency in typical applications to over 90%, power factor greater than 0.95, and easily meets EN61000-3-2C for total harmonic distortion. (THD) requirements. The THD can be less than 10% after optimization. The integrated single-stage converter topology also eliminates the need for high-voltage, large-capacity electrolytic capacitors, which significantly extend the life of the drive and extend life even at high ambient temperatures.

Accurate primary side control allows the driver to achieve truly tight current performance, with constant current regulation over +/- 5% under different loads, over a wide temperature range, and manufacturing variations, resulting in tighter Design margin and reduce system cost. The high switching frequency of 132 kHz allows the use of smaller, lower cost cores in space-constrained bulb applications, while frequency jitter also ensures reduced EMI filter design requirements. LYTSwitch devices provide all of the common security features of Power Integrations products, including overvoltage, overcurrent, and overtemperature protection.


The LYTSwitch family of LED driver ICs, combined with leading and trailing edge TRIAC dimmers, delivers excellent dimming performance and easily meets the NEMA SSL6 standard even at low conduction angles. The drive starts very fast, usually less than 500 milliseconds, and its startup speed is equally fast even when 10% of the light output is turned on. A bulb designed with the LYTSwitch IC can be turned on at almost the same dimming angle as when it was turned off, which virtually eliminates sudden brightening. In addition, the deadband in the TRIAC dimming is eliminated because the LYTSwitch controller ensures that the dimmer is dimmed as soon as it starts working.
