Northwest China is expected to become China's "electric power warehouse"

In the winter of recent years, power shortages frequently occur in parts of central and eastern China, and this situation will change radically with the emergence of the power industry in the northwest.

During the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” period, a large amount of surplus power began to appear in the northwestern region of China, and the construction of UHV power transmission channels connected with the northwest and central and eastern regions was formally initiated. Northwest power was continuously exported to the whole country for the first time. It is expected to become an important "electricity warehouse" in China during the "12th Five-Year Plan" period.

According to the statistics of Northwest Grid Co., Ltd., during the “11th Five-Year Plan” period, the Northwest Power Grid added 44.92 million kilowatts of power generation capacity, with a total installed capacity of 82.25 million kilowatts, 2.2 times that of 2005. The rapid development of new energy such as wind power, Jiuquan 10,000 kilowatts of wind power a project successfully put into operation, the entire network of wind power installed capacity reached 3.43 million kilowatts, 13.2 times in 2005.

In the face of soaring power, the Northwestern region cannot fully self-digest. In 2009, the northwestern region had an annual surplus of 100 billion kwh. On November 3, 2010, with the opening of the first “electricity highway” in Xinjiang to the mainland, the 750-kilovolt connection project between Xinjiang and the Northwest Power Grid, China’s largest energy “faucet” gradually opened.

During the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” period, the northwestern region has actively built power corridors to the central and eastern regions. There are already three power channels that have been put into operation, namely northwest to central China Lingbao back-to-back projects, Shaanxi Baoji to Sichuan Deyang DC project, Ningdong To Shandong DC project.

Relying on these channels, in January of this year, Northwest China Power Grid completed the transmission of 2.943 billion kwh of electricity from central and northern China across the region, an increase of 116.63% over the same period of the previous year, equivalent to the transmission of 1.03 million tons of standard coal, effectively mitigating Sichuan, Henan and Shandong provinces. Due to dry water, rain, snow, electricity, coal and other factors caused by tension situation.

However, to fundamentally resolve the current domestic power supply and demand contradiction, during the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, multiple power channels to the northeast from the northwest need to be constructed so that a large amount of surplus power in the northwest will be continuously exported to Central and Eastern China.

Cao Shengshun, Director of Development Planning Department of Northwest Power Grid Co., Ltd., told the reporter that Northwest Power Grid Co., Ltd. has now planned to build two UHV power transmission roads from Xinjiang to Central China Power Grid during the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period. One is Hami, Xinjiang - Zhengzhou, Henan 800 The KV line will have a planned investment of 40 billion yuan, and the other is a 1,000 kV line in the Jumbo-Chongqing, Xinjiang, with a planned investment of 45 billion yuan. According to calculations, after the completion of the two passages, it is equivalent to building a fixed power source with a installed capacity of 22 to 23 million kilowatts in Xinjiang in Central China, which will reduce the transportation of coal by 50 million tons per year in Central China.

In addition to the two power channels mentioned above, Northwest China Power Grid will build three UHV DC transmission projects from Ningxia to Zhejiang, Gansu to Hunan, and Gansu to Jiangxi during the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, and Shaanxi-Shandong ±660 kV DC. Send project, Qinghai-Tibet network project. At that time, the scale of power transmission from the Northwest Grid can be increased from the current 6.11 million kilowatts to 55.81 million kilowatts, which is 9.1 times the current scale of outbound delivery, thus becoming a veritable “electricity warehouse” in the country.
