Japan’s Kyocera Corporation has developed a miniature ceramic UHF RFID tag, which can be affixed to metal tools in the aerospace industry for identification and tracking.
RFID tags will be affixed to workshop tools of maintenance and repair service providers. The attached tags need to withstand the harsh environment of the workshop, including impact and dirt (such as oil, fuel, lubricants, etc.), without negatively affecting the reading performance due to the rugged ceramic package of the RFID tag.
In addition to tracking metal workshop tools, RFID technology can also be used to track aircraft parts. RFID tags will be attached to aircraft parts during production or maintenance, and will remain on the marked parts afterwards. The tags will withstand temperature differences that occur during flight operations. In this way, the paths of different aircraft components can be tracked.
Kyocera’s UHF RFID tags are packaged in ceramics and have a proprietary multilayer structure, including a built-in RFID antenna. The company has also developed a new ultra-small label with a size of 5 x 2 x 1.5mm. Compared with a label with a label size of 3 x 6 x 1.7mm, the label volume has been further reduced by nearly 50%.
In addition, RFID technology does not require visual scanning compared to barcode labels or direct labeling technologies. Since visual scanning of RFID is not required, the RFID tag can be read regardless of the condition of the tool (for example, when the tool is covered with dust, oil, etc.).
