Suzhou is called Pingjiang in ancient times and has a long history. The Spring and Autumn Period is the capital of Wu State. At that time, the gates of the city were Tuen Mun, Pan Men, Tuen Mun, etc. The name has been maintained to this day. In the poems of the later generations, many Suzhou cities are recorded. The names of streets, lanes, bridges and squares mentioned in many poems are still used today. Since the beginning of Wu Guo, since the Qin, Han, Jin and Tang Dynasties, Suzhou has been one of the important cities with large population and large scale along the southeast coast.

Pingjiang plan of the Song Dynasty

In the sixth year of the company (AD 601), the Grand Canal from Jingkou (Zhenjiang) to Yuhang was opened, making it a shipping center in the region. The commercial handicraft industry is more developed, so it has always been the central city of politics, economy and culture in Jiangnan. . In the Song Dynasty, the two sects of Buddhism and Taoism were located at the same or near the main roads. Due to the proper location of these towering buildings, they were well matched with urban roads and rivers, forming a good city view and a rich and beautiful City three-dimensional outline.

Pingjiang City is home to large landowners, bureaucrats and businessmen, as well as large homes. Before the Qing Dynasty, there were larger private gardens, such as Canglang Pavilion. There are records that: "The beautiful pool is ruled, the soil is mountain, the peak of the island, out of ingenuity." The urban gardens of Suzhou have developed more in the Southern Song Dynasty and have formed a unique style of Suzhou classical garden architecture.
