LEDinside recently visited Taiwan's LED packaging plant, Lian Ying Technology (UPEC), and visited Li Shaotang, general manager, to understand the recent operating conditions of Lian Ying and the 2009 outlook. Because Li Shaotang's general manager has a rich career experience, from IBM to Taiwan's Oracle, and from China's Dopod president to HTC's Asia-Pacific vice president, and then into the LED industry, he is particularly curious about why General Li has invested in the LED industry at the peak of his career.
Find the right platform for your industry
Many people wondered why General Manager Li had to move from HTC to the company. Therefore, General Manager Li came to Lianying for the first week to write a letter to more than 200 employees of the company and told them to come to the company. Several reasons. Among them he mentioned:
First, LED is the industry that is determined to go up in the next decade, and the company is on the right trend.
Second, under the full authority of the chairman, professional managers have a platform to play their full play.
Third, the great potential of the company is to do integrated services. This is very similar to HTC. Many products of HTC are based on the experience of users. In the future, the company must be moving towards the blue ocean strategy.
Because he can find a platform suitable for his own industry, General Manager Li hopes to copy his past successful management experience to Lianye's operation.
Transform and develop high-power LED and module products
The early company was mainly based on low-power LEDs, and its main products were mobile phone backlights and other products. However, in recent years, in order to enter the field of lighting, Lianying has transformed and developed high-power LED packaging applications, module development and lamp design, and invested more than 30 engineers in application development in the fields of optoelectronics, heat dissipation, machine components and electronics. . Lianying's products have considerable ink on ceramic substrates.
Therefore, the main products at this stage account for a large number of related applications such as modules and lighting. Revenues account for 70% of module development and 30% of components.
Leading peers launch Catch Eye Ball's value innovations
At present, Lian Ying's business strategy is to develop innovative products, and to exploit the company's original technological advantages in LTCC (low temperature co-fired ceramic substrate packaging) to develop applications with higher added value. General Manager Li introduced the LED industry through previous experience in the field of mobile phones and communications, and cited the HTC mobile phone as an example. HTC has designed the concept of mobile phone design as a physical model for telecom operators to see, feel, and touch. With such a testing sample, the user interface is repeatedly used to participate in the customer. The same concept applies to LED products, especially those that attract Catch eye balls. Therefore, the overall development process from Concept, Idea, Design in, Mockup, Testing sample, Mass Production, End of life, product cycle is about 2-3 years, and Lian Ying currently hopes to bring innovative products to the market to lead the industry. Grab the most lucrative early stage of profit.
TV-related applications and lighting products will be the focus of 2009
In the 2009 target, the company will adopt a model of parallel development of components and modules, and focus on products of innovative value. The operating model is based on OEM/ODM. The company hopes to open up the European and American markets and actively participate in the supply chain of international companies. At present, several projects are under negotiation. For the future of the application market, flat-panel TV with context lighting, LCD TV backlight module and lighting products is the focus of the future. Therefore, the strategy will turn to LED solution providers for lighting and TV-related applications.

Lian Ying has been in a period of transition in the recent period, and the company's performance is still in a state of stagnation. Therefore, it is necessary to wait until next year when new products come out. However, due to trade secrets, LEDinside did not see other new products except for the LED ambient light source that was previously created by the brand TV manufacturers.
At present, many LED manufacturers, whether they are packaging factories, chip manufacturers, or even peripheral components, have begun to integrate LED-related terminal applications. However, the thinking of product development is still stuck in the integration of technical capabilities, not to truly understand the needs of consumers, and even to create consumer demand.
Therefore, as General Manager Li said, how to design Catch eye ball products will be an important issue for many LED manufacturers.
