Samsung will start 1,000 jobs in the first washing machine factory in the United States

According to foreign media reports on January 15, South Korea’s Samsung Electronics announced on January 14 that it will launch its first washing machine factory in Newberry County, South Carolina, which is expected to reduce the U.S. The burden imposed by punitive tariffs.

On January 12, Samsung held a ceremony in Newberry County to celebrate the official launch of its first US factory. Kim Hyun-suk, president of Samsung Consumer Electronics, Henry McMaster, governor of South Carolina, and other US politicians attended the ceremony.

Samsung said it will invest a total of 380 million U.S. dollars (about 2.4 billion U.S. dollars) in the next three years. The goal is to produce 1 million washing machines each year and create more than 1,000 jobs.

The Samsung’s establishment of a new plant in the United States is due to the recommendation of the US International Trade Commission to President Trump’s government in November 2017 that it will import large-scale home washing machines exceeding 1.2 million sets from South Korea’s Samsung and LG companies within three years. In addition to the current tax rate, a 50% tariff is imposed. The proposal was made after the Whirlpool Corporation filed a protection petition in May 2017. Whirlpool has a market share of about 40% in the US washing machine market, but Samsung and LG have a 30% share and are on the rise.

The Trump administration plans to issue a resolution on protection measures in February. At the same time, according to a document issued by the World Trade Organization on January 12, the South Korean government hopes that the WTO will impose a penalty of at least US$710 million (about 4.6 billion yuan) on the United States each year.
