U.S. university research team plans to use drones to monitor the flock

The Virginia Tech research team is trying to apply drone technology to monitor the flock. Drones can help farmers quickly understand whether livestock need help or injury, see if the ewes have lambs, and monitor the approximate state of the farm.

According to reports, Dan Swafford, project assistant at the Virginia CooperaTIve Extension, said the correction is studying drones that can be used on small farms. The farm can use the drone as an inspection tool to keep the flock in a place to be.

The school's cooperation and promotion department held a field event in 2017, where experts showed how automated tools such as drones can assist farmers with precision farming techniques. Virginia Tech is also developing drones to monitor crops to sample microorganisms in the air.

Drones are expected to have a huge impact on agriculture in the coming years. According to a report by Zicheng United Accounting Firm (PwC), agricultural drones can monitor crops or livestock, which can reduce human error, save time and money, and the potential market will reach 32.4 billion US dollars.

More than a year ago, Andrew Weaver, a graduate student in the Department of Animal and Poultry Science, talked to Swafford about whether he wanted to use a drone to monitor the flock. The two sides collaborated to conduct research. Weaver, who is pursuing a doctorate at West Virginia University, has left the sheep and has a private pilot license.

Swafford and Weaver wanted to know if sheep would respond to nearby drones based on the methodology of research using drones to fly over crops and other livestock. They used a lens-equipped drone to fly over the flock and record how the sheep reacted to the drones on top of the head.

The drone flew 75 feet above the sheep and gradually moved closer to 10 feet. Some sheep walked away, some ignored the drone, and several sheep stared at the drone. After the drone flew a few times, the flock gradually became accustomed to it and was no longer affected.

The technology has many practical applications, including changing the way farmers manage livestock. On small farms, farmers can use drones to save inspection time and also patrol a wider range. The drone can be monitored at a specific height up to 2 football fields.

The technology is easy to use, lightweight, and affordable for farmers. Entertainment drones typically retail for about $500 and include all the technology farmers need. The drone can be connected to any tablet computer using a wireless network. Simple control makes the drone easy to operate, and the automatic take-off and landing functions allow the beginner pilot to start the drone in a few minutes.

The next step is to hand this technology to the farmers. Swafford, a former high school agricultural teacher, is showing the technology to students and is applying for a grant to bring the drone back to the family farm and test it with their parents. Swafford said the technology appeals to farm youth. They understand the nature of using livestock to monitor livestock, and they know that drones are not just cool technologies.

Programming Instructions
• Plug the Remoce Socket$($)lnto the wall socket(s) and switch on the mams supply, the red LED will flash every second.
• If the LED is not flashing press & hold the manual ON/OFF button for 5 seconds until it Hashes

•Press any ON switch on the Remote Control for approximately 2 seconds and the Remote Socket(s) learn the code. The LED will stop flashing top confirm the codehas been accepted.
• Any number of Remote Sockets can be programmed to one Remote Control ON button to create multiple switching.
• To programme o<her Remote Sockets on different Remote Control ON buttons repeat the prevous steps
• If the mains supply is turned off the Remote Sockets v/ill lose their code and it wil be necessary to re-pcogramme.
Operation:
• Plug your appliance(s) into the Remote Socket(s)
• Press the programmed ON or OFF button on the Remote Control to control the Remote Socket.
♦ The Remote Sockets can also be operated manually using its ON/OFF Button Trouble shooting
If a Remote Socket does not react to the Remote Control please check the followng:

• Distance too large between the remote control and the recerver (ensure the range distance is no more than 20 clear Metres) and free from obstacle that may reduce the distance.
• If programming has not been successful, tum the power off and back on then follow the programming steps above.
