From 2021, China will phase out the production and use of mercury-containing batteries and fluorescent lamps required by the Minamata Convention on Mercury; VCM (vinyl chloride, which will produce mercury-containing wastewater) will be used in the production of unit products in 2021. Reduced by 50% (on the basis of 2010);
By 2032, all primary mercury mines should be shut down; for coal-fired electric field sources, emission preparations should be completed by 2020, key sources of control should be identified, and emission reduction targets and measures should be determined.
Yu Lifeng said that in order to implement the Convention, the Ministry of Environmental Protection has revised a number of mercury-related emission standards with relevant departments, assessed the current status of the ten major mercury-related industries, and initiated the preparation of the strategic action plan.
In the next step, we will jointly promote the reduction of the mercury industry by controlling sources, reducing and developing alternative technologies, and carry out the management of mercury-containing wastes and contaminated sites in a planned and step-by-step manner.
