Infineon Introduces BGM103xN7 Series, the World's Smallest Receiver Front End Module

Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) today announced a new family of receiver front-end modules that enable global navigation satellite system (GNSS) functionality for smartphones and other mobile devices. The new BGM103xN7 family of devices is the first module to support independent or simultaneous reception of Global Positioning System ( GPS ) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) signals. The three devices optimized for different receiving platforms feature low power operation, exceptional electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection, and a small package size (2.3 mm x 1.7 mm x 0.73 mm).

The BGM103xN7 module combines a pre-filter with a low-noise amplifier (LNA) circuit at the front end of the GNSS signal chain to reduce board space and shorten customer product design time while improving performance. Infineon's flexible solutions ensure critical design goals, including high linearity to avoid stronger cellular signal interference, single-mode coverage in the 1575 MHz to 1605 MHz frequency range, and optimized gain for optimal receive sensitivity And ultra low noise and so on.

Michael Mauer, senior director of marketing for RF and protection devices at Infineon Technologies, said: "Even if GNSS evolves into a serialized system operated by different entities, mobile terminals combine more high-power RF technologies such as Wi-Fi and LTE, and mobile terminal design. Researchers at iSuppli expect smartphone sales to reach 450 million units in 2012, and almost all support GNSS applications. With the introduction of the new BGM family of devices, Infineon helps designers meet the needs of personal navigation and location-based applications for smartphones and portable devices such as notebooks, digital cameras and watches.

The new BGM series includes three modules for platform-specific applications:

-BGM1033N7: Standardized solution for high performance GPS / GLONASS specification (gain of 14.8db, noise figure of 1.65db)
-BGM1032N7: Optimized to suppress LTE Band13 signals, with the characteristics of BGM1033N7. The upper limit frequency of the LTE 13 band is 787 MHz, and the second harmonic frequency of this frequency (ie 1574 MHz) belongs to the GPS band.
-BGM1034N7: High gain (17.0 db) models for systems with high signal reception losses. These systems include personal navigation devices and digital cameras in which potential interference is less severe due to the presence of high power cellular signals.

Common features of the BGM family of devices include low current consumption (4.0 mA / 3.1 mA) for mobile terminals, out-of-band rejection greater than 43 dBc, and input compression points in the cellular band of +30 dBm. The RF input pins of these three devices have electrostatic discharge capability of 8kV, which is IEC compliant, allowing designers to meet electrostatic discharge requirements with just one external component.

To meet different design requirements, the Infineon BGM103xN47 module provides the flexibility to give engineers the flexibility to place any required post filter (single-ended / balanced with applicable noise figure and attenuation) close to the GNSS receiver At the same time, the pre-filter and the low-noise amplifier are placed close to the antenna to achieve the best receiving sensitivity. All three modules feature a pre-filter with very low insertion loss and high out-of-band rejection, and a high-performance GNSS low-noise amplifier behind the filter.
