Technology blog TechCrunch quoted sources as saying that Google is acquiring Kaggle, a platform for data science and machine learning competitions. Detailed information about the transaction has not yet been disclosed, but given that Google will host the Cloud Next Cloud Technology Conference in San Francisco this week, official news is likely to be announced tomorrow.
TechCrunch contacted Kaggle CEO Anthony Goldbloom by phone, and he did not deny the acquisition, while Google declined to comment.
Kaggle was founded in 2010 by Golgbloom and Ben Hammer, which currently has about 500,000 data scientists. Kaggle's competitors include DrivenData, TopCoder, and HackerRank, but Kaggle's focus has kept it ahead. Kaggle is actually the most important platform for current data science and machine learning competitions.
As one of the largest and most active data scientists community, Kaggle's presence in Google will be greatly enhanced after it is acquired by Google.
In fact, Kaggle has recently been closer to Google. Earlier this month, Google and Kaggle co-hosted a $100,000 machine learning competition featuring YouTube video categories. Participants can use YouTube-8M as training data to build an audiovisual content classification model using Google Cloud Machine Learning.
Although for Google, the acquisition may be more due to the consideration of the Kaggle community, not its technology. But Kaggle actually created some "kernels" and some very interesting tools to help hold the competition. On Kaggle, the kernel is basically the source code for analyzing data sets that developers can share on the platform.
According to CrunchBase, Kaggle currently has $12.5 million (but PitchBook's data is $12.75 million). Investors include Index Ventures, Max Levchin, Naval Ravikant, Google Chief Economist Hal Varian, Khosla Ventures, and Yuri. Milner.
TechCrunch believes that after the acquisition of Kaggle, Google will keep Kaggle up and running, and it is likely that it will not be renamed. However, like other competitive websites, Kaggle also has a "Jobs" section, and it is not clear how Google will handle this business.
