"Metal mesh component" antenna technology for blood test components

Starting with the “2011 International Modern Hospital Exhibition” (July 13-15, 2011), medical exhibitions have been held in Japan in recent weeks. Murata Co., Ltd. participated in the exhibition for the first time at these exhibitions and vigorously introduced the company's development policy in the medical field. Murata has generally proposed two directions. One is to actively promote general-purpose electronic components in the medical field. For example, laminated ceramic capacitors that were previously mainly supplied to automobiles will rely on high reliability and are also "suitable for medical devices". For other electronic components, Murata will expand sales in the future based on detailed reliability.

Figure 1: Developing components for blood tests

(a) is a metal mesh component developed by Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. The target is reacted with a metal mesh element to which the host has been previously applied, and the frequency characteristic of the electromagnetic wave is used to determine whether the host and the target are bound (b). (Fig. (b) is produced by the site based on information from Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd.)

The other direction is to develop electronic components that are dedicated to the medical field. Murata is preparing to adopt its superior technology in development. For example, for medical examinations such as blood tests, Murata's reference shows "metal mesh components" using antenna technology. This component eliminates the need for markings required in previous medical examinations, significantly reducing the time and cost of inspection (Figure 1). The goal is to put it into practice after 5 years.

The medical examination needs to confirm whether the "target" to be examined has a binding (antigen-antibody reaction) to the "host". The development product only needs to apply the target metal mesh component to the surface before dropping the target. Use electromagnetic waves to determine if they are combined. The principle is that in the case of bonding and unbonding, "the peak of the frequency characteristic of the output electromagnetic wave changes when the electromagnetic wave is irradiated to the metal mesh element", in which the antenna technology of the company plays a role. "When illuminating electromagnetic waves, the design that maximizes the electromagnetic wave energy intensity of the metal mesh portion is a key to achieving the product."

In the above-mentioned series of exhibitions, in addition to Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd., other companies have also applied their own superior technologies to the medical field. For example, Matsushita Electric applied mounting technology to capsule cameras, Dainippon Printing applied TFT technology to biosensors, and Texas Instruments applied DLP technology to vein visualization systems. These measures are expected to further accelerate the development of medical electronics in the future.
