Apple replaces OLED display on smart watch with miniature LED panel

According to sources in Taiwan's supply chain, Apple may use the miniature LED panel in the second half of 2017 to replace the OLED display currently used on Apple's smart watches. Apple established a micro LED R&D lab in Taipei in April 2015. From 1 micron to 100 micron, the cost of producing miniature LED panels is currently higher than that of OLED panels, and the cost of OLED panels is higher than the LCD panels commonly used in the iPhone, iPad and MacBook lineups. Apple acquired LuxVue, a manufacturer of miniature LED display devices in May 2014
Currently, Apple relies on third-party vendors to provide displays, including things like Samsung, LG, and more. LuxVue's acquisition is seen as a potential sign that Apple may develop new display technologies within the company rather than relying on external suppliers. Apple's purchase of LuxVue and its technology will likely be used in Apple's smart watches, where energy efficiency is the most important gain.

Familiar with micro LED technology experts, they believe that the technology is a suitable successor for OLED, they believe that Apple smart watches are good candidates for using micro LED display. Micro LED technology has not yet been applied to any of the listed products, it is currently difficult to build any meaningful size display panel, so Apple's rumors of launching micro LED display products in 2017 may be too ambitious. However, if Apple does manage to find a breakthrough in micro LEDs, it could become the first company to adopt a miniature LED display.
