Luke Lin, a senior analyst at market research firm DigiTImesResearch, said today that Apple is working to develop MicroLED panels for both small and large-sized devices and to support TSMC in the development of small-sized MicroLED panels.
Luke Lin said that Apple is working with TSMC to develop a silicon-based MicroLED panel that will be used in Apple Watch and Augmented Reality (AR) wearable devices. At the same time, Apple is also developing a large-size MicroLED panel based on a thin-film transistor (TFT) backplane that will be used for products that are much larger than the MacBook.
He quoted upstream supply chain sources as saying that Apple is preparing to prepare two MicroLED panels for small-sized applications: one for 1.3-inch to 1.4-inch for future Apple Watch and the other for 0.7- to 0.8-inch for Among the AR wearable devices, it may be AR glasses.
The microLED panels used in Apple Watch may be mass-produced in the second half of this year or next year, while large-size microLED panels may be in volume production by 2019 or later. The mass production plan for the microLED panels used in AR wearable devices has not yet been established.
However, Luke Lin believes that Apple will only use microLED panels in the future Apple Watch high-end phenotype. He expects the cost of the new microLED panel to be 400% to 600% higher than the same size OLED panel used by existing Apple Watches.
