The UK startup CloudNC is an artificial intelligence (AI) company that was born in the incubator Entrepreneur First, focusing on the development of factory automation software. In addition to shortening manufacturing time and reducing costs through AI, CloudNC also develops software and cloud services for computer numerical control (CNC) lathe programming automation.
According to reports, CNC lathes mainly engrave solid metal into parts, which can be applied to many devices, including the body of a Macbook, the body of a car, and the turbine blades of a jet engine. Unlike 3D printing, this casting method is a "subtraction" mode in which the metal is cut to leave the finished product.
When the CNC lathe converts the 3D design into the actual finished product, it needs to pre-program the sequence of the control instructions of the input machine. At present, this is a highly technical work, which requires manual manual completion. The engineer must not only indicate the exact cutting position of the machine, but also Set the cutting method.
Since the same machine can have hundreds of tools, writing a program for a CNC lathe is very time consuming, and more complicated parts require more than 100 hours to write programs. In addition to replacing human writing, CloudNC also hopes to solve another problem of CNC lathes, which is manufacturing speed.
According to CloudNC, it is impossible for humans to accurately calculate the time required to cut metal. The AI combined with the super-computing power of the cloud can accurately grasp the time, shorten the time for manufacturing parts, and then reduce costs.
CloudNC recently completed Series A financing, raising a total of 9 million pounds. Investors include European venture capital firm Atomico. In addition to Atomico, the original shareholders including Episode 1 and Entrepreneur First also participated in CloudNC's Series A financing. Atomico believes that CloudNC is in line with the company's participation in the "Industry 4.0" strategy and may continue to increase its investment in CloudNC in the future.
