The mobility of cloud computing is not that simple

Many cloud computing providers are talking about the mobility of their business, which means using technologies like containers, but it's as simple as that.

Migability means that organizations can migrate applications from one host environment to another, including migrations between cloud platforms. For example, from Amazon Web Services to Microsoft Azure. The work required to migrate an application from one platform to another depends on the situation.

A container is a technology that encapsulates applications and operating systems into packages that can run on standard platforms that support containers such as Docker or Kubernetes, making migration easier. But the container is not a panacea.

The reality is that migrating applications (whether or not they are in a container) requires a lot of planning to handle compatibility issues in different environments. The use of containers does not guarantee that an enterprise's containerized applications can be migrated from one platform to another. For example, companies can't run on Windows with a containerized application designed for Linux, or vice versa.

The mobility of cloud computing is not that simple

In fact, containers are actually a great way to bundle applications with the operating system. Enterprises do use containers to enhance mobility, but they don't get the results that many people think can be migrated on any platform.

Of course, businesses need to be portable and have it. All of this requires more planning when creating an application.

The truth is that all applications are portable if the company has enough time and money. The idea is to create an application that moves the least amount of work from one platform to another. Using containers or other technologies can help companies provide cross-platform application compatibility, but they are only part of the equation. Therefore, mobility is not binary.

Perhaps the most critical aspect of mobility is that companies have to pay a huge price: they have reduced performance by using the lowest standards in all environments. The more features an enterprise application uses on a local deployment platform or cloud platform, the less likely an enterprise application will be able to migrate. The reason is simple: it combines many of the ideal features associated with a particular operating system, language, cloud platform, or other technology, and these features cannot be migrated as they are, and sometimes cannot be migrated at all.

The only way to alleviate this situation is to plan and design. Even so, technology will continue to change. Mobility is never binary, and it is hard to be unaffected during the migration process.
